We are pleased to initiate these pages highlighting the Golden Anniversary of St. Irenaeus. Monthly, we will track the milestones of its vibrant history, highlight our Founders Club members and feature biographies of those who laid the foundation of this parish. You’ll also find information on events and activities that lead up to our Golden Anniversary celebration on June 25, 2017 and extend to the end of this glorious year. Throughout the coming year, keep checking the church bulletin which will feature a weekly page, called In the beginning . . .
In the beginning . . .
St. Irenaeus Parish celebrated its First Mass on Sunday, June 26, 1967. Pastor of the newly-formed 200-family parish was Monsignor Raymond Kuzava.
Construction of the temporary church, which is now the Parish Activities Building, began almost immediately. It was not until November of 1980 that the current church building was
consecrated by Cardinal John Francis Dearden of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Over the next 50 years, St. Irenaeus grew not only in size – there are now more than 2100
families in the parish – but in Religious Education and Christian Service programs and activities. Today, more than 500 children annually participate in Religious Education classes that include preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion, as well as Confirmation.
As people of faith enlivened by the Holy Spirit, the members of St. Irenaeus are called to
proclaim God’s glory by reaching out and administering to the needs of the parish, the
community and beyond through worship, education and Christian service.
A message from Fr. Brian . . .
As we approach our 50th anniversary in 2017, we remember and give thanks
to those who built the spiritual and physical foundations of our St Irenaeus
Parish. We fondly recall Monsignor Kuzava and all those who planted the
mustard seeds of faith and community, building from what was an empty
field in Avon Township into our parish family today of over 2000 households.
Our mission today remains the same as when our parish was established
in 1967 – to share and live the Good News that is Jesus Christ. While our
anniversary will look back and celebrate 50 years of parish life, we will
also look forward and continue to build the spiritual foundations for
tomorrow. May the Holy Spirit lead us in the year ahead, as we joyfully
celebrate being followers of Jesus Christ!
Yours in Christ,

Our Anniversary Celebration Begins
Following the masses on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8, we launched our Golden Anniversary celebratory year. The event was open all parishioners and hosted by our Pastor, Fr. Brian, the Parish Council, the Anniversary Steering Committee and Parish Staff. Guests were treated to refreshments, live music and the beginning panels of an anniversary historical display which will develop throughout the year. This was also an opportunity for parishioners to obtain information and sign up for various volunteer activities which will be going on throughout the year. Attendees were generous with their positive comment and we hope to build parishioner involvement as we move forward.
