The Office of Catechetics is called to serve the parish and the

larger church of the Archdiocese of Detroit.  Our call is to enable

parents to instill in their children a faith which is living, conscious

and active.  Parents are the first and best teachers of the faith.

We assist our parents in empowering them to share their life

story and the life story of Jesus and the church which emerged

from the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The office of Catechetics offers reflections on the story

of Jesus found in the Hebrew and Christian testaments.

We hope children will learn the story as it unfolded

in the call of Abraham and leading to the incarnation of

Jesus. The children would also reflect on the early church

as found in the Acts of the Apostles.

The young people are introduced to the sacramental ministry

of the church from preschool through high school.  Our call

to discipleship is based on the sacrament of baptism and

celebrated in the Eucharist every Sunday.  We stress the

sacramental system as found in the RCIA.

Finally, our program has a strong component of service to the

church and to the world.  We emphasize all are called to be

priest, prophet and king.  This is of course done in an age

appropriate way.  The children are involved in the service

projects sponsored by our Christian Service department.

We are especially dedicated to OCIMA which was founded

by Fr. Nick Amico.  This ministry serves the poor in

Guatemala, Ecuador, and Honduras.  We have not only a

monetary connection to these countries but have on a yearly

basis had staff and parishioners go with Fr. Nick to meet and

talk to the sisters, priests and lay leaders of these programs.

The catechetical programs celebrate the sacraments of Eucharist,

Reconciliation and Confirmation according to the directives of the RCIA.

Eucharist is primarily celebrated in grade 2.  We expect children to be

enrolled in the catechetical program in grade one.  Sue Hug who is the

coordinator for this grade level provides the parents and children with

an understanding of the Eucharist which helps them understand the

mystery of the incarnation.  We hope our parents and children come to

grow in the awareness of the theology of the Body of Christ as transformative

in all aspects of their life.

We offer the sacrament of reconciliation for children in grades two to four.

Parents are given the opportunity to choose at what age this sacrament

can be meaningfully celebrated.  We emphasize that the Eucharist is

the main sacrament of reconciliation.  The call to grace is provided in

our daily encounters as family and members of the world community.

In accordance with Quam Singulari we provide the opportunity for

all to choose when to celebrate the sacrament.  As stated: “Let no one

forbid this sacrament and let no one impose it”.

Confirmation is celebrated in grade 9.  We have a two year program

starting in the eighth grade.  In the grade 8 parents and the youth attend

a once a month meeting.  They also participate in a day of reflection and

in service projects.
