St. Irenaeus Christian Service Commission
The Christian Service Commission exists as a model and resource of Catholic Social Teaching
to enable the entire parishcommunity to put the social teaching of the church into action. The
Commission empowers the members of the parish to fulfill theChurch’s mission of love, justice,
freedom, and peace. We communally respond, in an organized way, to societal and individual
needs.By creating and/or promoting programs, the Commission strives to address human
needs and achieve justice whether locally or in the broader communities of vicariate,archdiocese,
state, nation, and world.There are five committees plus a variety of other projects overseen by
the Christian Service Commission.
Main Committess of Christian Service:
- Earth Ministry - The Earth Ministry team coordinates the Earth Day celebration,
- cares for the flower beds on our property, and brings information and programs

Gospel of Life - Gospel of Life offers Right to Life Christmas cards for
sale, raises funds and makes donations toRight To Life and local pregnancy
centers, and serves as a conduit for information on Life issues. If you have

Parish Health Ministry - The Parish Health Ministry offers blood pressure
screenings at the Sunday Socials, coordinates theFlu Vaccine Clinic in October,
gives info on various health topics, and organizes a seminar each year. If you have

Senior Fellowship – Senior Fellowship is a group of adults 55 and over who
join in fellowship and spirituality through social activities, outreach projects,
and a sharing of common interests. If you would like to know more about the

St. Vincent de Paul - Our St. Vincent de Paul conference responds to the needs
of the poor with monthly food drives, bi-annual clothing drives, daily delivery of
Panera bread products, and direct aid or referral to those in crisis. If you would

Other Projects:
Advent by Candlelight – women’s only evening of reflection during Advent.
Baldwin Soup Kitchen lunch – serve lunch the fourth Wednesday of each month in Pontiac
Career Path Network- Semi-Monthly networking meetings for those who are transitioning.
Christmas Adopt-a-Family – Connect parishioners with Lighthouse and Criminal Justice Ministry
(CJM)families to be adopted;deliver donations
Christmas Donations – collect gifts for Neighborhood House and CJM and deliver.
Clean Your Desk Campaign – Collect used school supplies, sort, package and ship to
Quixote Center for Nicaraguan schools.
CROP Walk – Participate in the Rochester CROP Walk to end hunger.
God’s Little Ones (GLO) Nursery – offer nursery for ages 0 to 5 during 10am mass with
adult and student sitters
Good Samaritans – help parishioners on a short-term basis: visits, rides, errands.
Habitat for Humanity – organize volunteers from St. Irenaeus to participate with the
Rochester Coalition in summer build of Habitat homes in Pontiac
Lighthouse Thanksgiving food collection – organize, collect, and deliver
donations to Lighthouse of Oakland County
Neighborhood House backpack collection – organize, collect, and deliver donations
of new backpacks to RochesterArea Neighborhood House
New Year’s Day Meals on Wheels for OPC – purchase, prepare, and package
holiday meal for homebound seniors in Rochester area for the Older Persons’ Commission
Our Lady Rosary Makers – meet monthly for prayer and fellowship; make
mission rosaries at home
Place of Hope/Warming Center – serve dinner and provide overnight
supervision for one week in March at the Baldwin Center in Pontiac
Red Cross Blood Drives – coordinate and host tri-annual drives
SOS Week of Hospitality – host 30 homeless from the South Oakland Shelter
for 1 week at St. Irenaeus: dinner,hospitality, showers, bedrooms, breakfast,
sack lunch, and morning and evening rides
St. Pat’s Senior Center dinners – make desserts; serve dinner bi-annually
at St. Patrick’s SeniorCenter in Detroit

Christian Service Commission meetings
meetings take place from 9:30 to 11am on the 3rd Monday of most months.
Meeting dates for 2009/10 are:

May 17 (Field Trip)
Our meetings include prayer and meditation, reflection on past projects, planning of future events,
and discussion how to promote Catholic Social Teaching at our parish(as well as delicious treats and meaningful fellowship!).
