Be the hands and feet of Christ! We offer a wide variety of service and outreach projects at parish and community-levels throughout the year. Join in!
Mercy in Action Day – Saturday, October 20, 2018
Bring a friend and join us for the Archdiocese of Detroit’s third annual Mercy in Action Day of Service! We will begin with a prayer breakfast, then engage in service projects at our parish and in our community. Join us as we pack SnackPax for poor children in Detroit; make fleece scarves for the homeless; tie lap blankets for cancer patients… or hand out coats and blankets at God’s Helping Hands; put on a ‘fall fun day’ for residents of Samaritas; and clean up a section of John R Road. (View detailed list below for more!)
Sign up for the breakfast, then scroll/tab through and sign up for your service activity!

Time and Talent Survey
Many of those who worship at St. Irenaeus also express their faith, skills, and creativity through volunteering and leading. Whether you have a couple of hours once-a-year or a few hours each week, you will find a myriad of opportunities through St. Irenaeus to serve fellow parishioners or folks in our community. Look over the Time & Talent survey – it’s the best way to let us know what you want to be involved in!
Office of Christian Service
By our baptism, we are called by Christ to serve our brothers and sisters, especially the poor. We respond to the needs of others by offering the assistance they require such as food, clothing, and fellowship (charity) and by speaking up on their behalf against social conditions that may create poverty (justice). Many Christians find the call to serve easy to fulfill! It is natural that our love for the Lord and our gratitude for all the blessings he has given us produce delight in the chance to return His love by serving others. Parishioners of St. Irenaeus have a reputation for being very active, creative and generous in their outreach!
The Christian Service Office coordinates opportunities in which you can take action benefiting those in our parish and community who need our care and encouragement. The pages on our website describe the committees and main projects in which we participate. You are welcome to contact the committee / project leader for more information and to find out how you can serve. Please also check a current bulletin for upcoming efforts.
Christian Service Commission objective:
to create and/or promote programs that strive to address human needs and achieve justice as called for by Catholic Social Teaching
Committees and Objectives
There are several specific ministries that fall under the umbrella of our Christian Service Commission, allowing us to make a significant and creative impact on our parish and community. These include: Catholic Social Teaching, Earth Ministry, Gospel of Life, Parish Health Ministry, Parish Services, Prayer Warriors, Senior Fellowship, and our newly added Special Needs Prayer Group. These committees are great ways to link your passion with a purpose!
There are many monthly and annual opportunities for meaningful service that come out of the Christian Service Office. If you would enjoy serving in a soup kitchen, making blankets for the homeless, delivering food to the homebound, blessing someone at Christmas time—or any number of different opportunities—take a peek and see how you can get involved!
Christian Service Year End Summary
Jesus explains our final judgment – the Son of Man will separate people into two groups, with the ones who inherit the kingdom of God being in the group who responded with mercy and love:
I was hungry and you gave me food…
I was thirsty and you gave me drink…
I was a stranger and you welcomed me…
I was naked and you clothed me…
I was ill and you comforted me…
I was in prison and you visited me…
(from Matthew 25:31-46)
