How to Befriend the Bereaved

Funeral Luncheons

Many people are needed to help prepare beautiful funeral luncheons in our Parish Hall.  We have shoppers, table setters, kitchen helpers to prepare and cook food, servers, a clean up crew, table cloth washers and ironers, and occasionally homemade dessert-makers.

Good Samaritans

Good Samaritans are trained, caring, trustworthy parishioners from St. Irenaeus who express God’s love through attention to spiritual and physical needs.

Our Mission:

  • to be helpful visitors and friends to St. Irenaeus parishioners who are temporarily or long-term homebound due to illness or age
  • to support parishioners with short-term needs
  • to reach out with love and gifts to our homebound and our neighbors at Danish Village and Medilodge

How we help:

We make friendly visits, send notes, call on the phone, help write letters, read aloud, pray, go for a walk, drive to errands or appointments, do light housekeeping, prepare food, and suggest other church or community programs which may benefit parishioners in need.  We have helped single moms with carpooling, cared for parishioners after surgery, and prepared gifts for our homebound and residents of Danish Village and Medilodge.

What’s involved:

Our Good Samaritans have great flexibility.  When a need is brought to our attention, we share it with our group.  Those willing and able to help at that time are called upon.  We have quarterly meetings, and gather in-between to prepare gift bags for Christmas and Easter, and put on a 4th of July cookout with Bingo and prizes.

Old and New

Old… God’s Little Ones Nursery:  If you are looking for the GLO Nursery, we are sorry to say that due to lack of use over the past several months, it is now closed.  Feel free to enjoy Mass with your little ones in the Gathering Area if they need to move a little!

New… Meal Ministry:  We are currently putting together a list of parishioners who would like to provide a meal for parishioners the first couple of days after their loved one passed, or after surgery or other stressful situations.

Join Us!

You are encouraged to try any of these ministries.  At the same time that you are serving, you are enjoying fantastic fellowship!  For more information, contact: Cindy Monaghan –, 248-656-8720.
